K-factor values are sourced from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) SSURGO database and reflect published soil erodibility data for California.

About the K-Factor and Soil Erodibility

The K-factor (soil erodibility factor) is a key input in the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). It quantifies how susceptible a soil is to erosion by rainfall and runoff, on a scale from 0 (very resistant) to 0.65 (highly erodible). Sandy soils with low organic matter typically have higher K-factors; clay-rich or stony soils tend to be more resistant.

California's Construction General Permit (CGP) requires the K-factor in Risk Level Calculations for construction stormwater compliance. Each soil series in this directory includes the published NRCS K-factor to support accurate RUSLE inputs for your site.
